Day 1 – Arrival in Fakenham

We started our Norfolk holiday on mid-summers day,if only someone had told the weather that! We definitely weren’t going to let a bit of cloud and drizzle spoil our day and all set off in our usual high spirits.  I met Carol and Mandy at Brazen Hall Barns and the staff for our first holiday since 2019 was complete.

I’d forgotten how stunning Brazen Hall Barn is, a clever and spacious barn conversion with 7 luxury en suite bedrooms and a large open plan living space with light streaming in from the plentiful windows and French doors looking out over the Norfolk countryside.

Mandy and I set off for Gressenhall Farm and WorkHouse to meet up with our first 2 guests, Mr and Mrs M, whose daughter had arranged to drop them off there to start their holiday.  The weather was still determined not to recognise it was Summer, so once we had all greeted each other and said our goodbyes to Mr and Mrs Ms daughter, we headed straight to the cafe for a welcome cup of tea and a sandwich.

Mr M had been born, lived and worked in Norfolk before moving south and he was fascinated to learn that the Gressenhall Farm and Work House was part of Norfolk Museums as he had once worked for them in a different museum.  Gressenhall started life as a Workhouse and since it’s closure has been a care home until the 70s when it became the Norfolk Museum of Rural Life – which a large part still is.  They have also bought the workhouse to life with artefacts, displays and stories of real people who lived and worked there.  We spent a few hours exploring the museum and grounds before departing for Brazen Hall, a short 20 minute journey.

Our other guests, Mr and Mrs D, had already arrived at the property and once we had showed our guests to their rooms, we had a cup of tea on the terrace until the weather reminded us it was not having any of this Summer business by drizzling a little bit.  We moved inside to continue our chat.

Before we knew it Carol had cooked up a very tasty meal of quiche, new potatoes and salad which all enjoyed and then it was time for Carols legendary Pavlova and it completely lived up to its expectations – I had been doing extra steps to justify tucking into the merengue base covered in cream with raspberry coulis and peaches on top.  We all agreed it was delicious.

In the evening we chatted and reminisced and even managed a game of ‘social straws’.  Like everything at the moment, the game was adapted to make it Covid safe with Carol holding all of the straws and asking the guests to choose a number.  On each straw is a question which we all answered, for example “Which famous person from history would you like to meet”.  The answers were interesting and varied, from meeting Turin (Enigma) to Florence Nightingale!  Mr M told us a fascinating story of being given a plain black adults gas mask as a child and feeling really put out because his younger sister had a Mickey Mouse gas mask.

In the evening we lit the fire and relaxed on the sofas and finally, as the day was ending, we saw the sun, setting and turning the sky red – you know what they say “Red sky at night, Shepherds delight”.

Day 2 – Sea, Sand & Birds

We woke up to bird song and glimmers of blue sky.  The guests had made their breakfast choices the evening before and decided they would like breakfast around 9am.  Some opted for cereals and toast, Mrs M went for the full English and I decided I’d like poached egg on toast. My poached egg choice led to a discussion about the best method for a perfect poached egg and I recalled the method I use which I’d learned from a cookery programme and always worked for me.  Carol adopted the method and was delighted with the results (if you’re interested my Perfect Poached egg method is below).  As we ate our breakfast we looked at the bird spotting sheet to fill in as the week progressed.

As you might have guessed from the title of this blog, today was bird themed and as I walked into the garden I was greeted by the sound of excited rooks.  I looked across to the small church and saw what they were getting into a tizzy about, they were mobbing a buzzard.  The buzzard was persistent but no match for the mob of angry rooks and eventually he “buzzed” off – see what I did there?

I have heard all about MindforYou’s Joy Inside sessions carried out over Zoom during the lockdown, but I had never seen or been a part of one.  The guests and I were in for a treat when we connected with the lovely Rosie, who had put together a bird themed session full of interesting facts, pictures, music, songs and a just for fun quiz.  Of course, the grand finale had to be the Birdie Song, neither Carol nor I could resist demonstrating the actions, much to the amusement of the guests!

Mr M asked about going for a walk and as Sculthorpe Moor Nature reserve is only a couple of miles away, we suggested that might be an ideal location.  Mr & Mrs D opted to relax at the property, so Mr and Mrs M, Mandy and I all hopped into the car and took the short drive to the nature reserve.  What a treat! The reserve is flat and visitors walk along a board walk, through woods and wetland, passing hidden bird hides.  I was so impressed with Mandy’s knowledge of the birds which she credits to watching Chris Packham during lock down.  We spent a wonderful hour there, even getting our binoculars out to view the birds from a hide, a first for me but definitely won’t be the last.  Mr And Mrs M had a keen eye for spotting and recognising the birds and thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu visit.

Having worked up an appetite we returned to the accommodation and were greeted by an afternoon tea of an assortment of sandwiches and cakes and of course cups of tea.

The clouds were becoming less and less and the blue sky was getting more of a look in, although a bit blustery.  After a rest we all set off for Wells Next The Sea about 20 minutes away. On the way we were lucky enough to spot a Red Kite, glimmering in the sunshine, truly spectacular!

Mrs M had decided she’d like a bit of retail therapy and Mandy accompanied her on a look around the little shops in Wells, meanwhile Mr M and I went up to the beach and met up with Mr and Mrs D.  It was blustery and as we reached the beach, the wind gathered in strength.  We all beat a hasty retreat back to the beach cafe, where the outdoor tables were sheltered from the breeze and we could all enjoy a cuppa.

Mr M and I went to meet up with Mrs M and Mandy, Mr M stayed in the car and I stood outside to spot them.  “I’ve spotted them” I told Mr M “and Mrs M has a bag”.   “Just one bag?” was Mr Ms reply which made me laugh.  The laughter continued when we all met up at The Bowling Green Inn for a tasty fish and chip supper, with wonderful home made vegetarian options for the 3 vegetarians among us.  It’s wonderful to see guests relaxing, enjoying each others company and most of all laughing together, it’s what makes these holidays so special.

We ended the day, curled up on the sofas, watching a film on the TV.  A perfect end to a fabulous day.

My Perfect Poached Egg Recipe:

  • Boil a saucepan of water and then turn down the heat to barely simmering.
  • Add a drop of white wine vinegar (optional but useful to keep the egg together if it is not fresh)
  • With a slotted spoon, immerse the egg with its shell on, in the water for 10 seconds.
  • Crack the egg into the pan, as near to the water as possible.
  • Cook for 3 minutes for a runny yolk, 4 minutes for a partly runny yolk or 5 minutes for a hard yolk, Timings are approximate.
  • Remove your perfect poached egg from the pan with a slotted spoon.

Day 3 – Messing About on the River

The weather surpassed itself today as we woke up to clear blue skies.

After our breakfast the guests enjoyed a relaxing morning doing as they pleased.  Mrs M went into Fakenham with Mandy for an hour, to check out the shops and Mr M decided to do a jigsaw.  I’m sure Mr M was relieved when Mrs M returned with just the one bag! Mr and Mrs D chose to take their time and relax.  Before long it was time to set out for Wroxham on the Norfolk Broads.

The sun continued to shine as we made the 50 minute journey to  Wroxham Hotel, situated on the river with glorious views.  We made the most of the weather by sitting outside on the terrace, watching the world go by as we enjoyed our sandwiches.  It was a perfect day for messing about the river and as we sat Mr M recalled stories of his grandfathers time skippering a boat called The Queen of the Broads many years ago.

Before we knew, it was time to board the Belle of the Broads for our trip.  Mr D finds steps extremely difficult and can only manage one or two but thankfully the boat has wheel chair access via a lift.  All aboard, we set off through Wroxham, passing the hotel where we had eaten.  Mr M noticed a large group of swans being fed, in fact I’d never seen so many swans together in one place!

As we progressed along the river we passed some truly amazing houses, some thatched, some on stilts and some very new and contemporary and all shared with the ducks, geese and swans.  Mr and Mrs M and Mandy were on bird watch duty, Mr Ms keen eyes spotting a hawk and all identifying great crested grebes, a heron, various ducks and gaggles of geese swimming in formation towards the boats in the hope of some tasty morsels of food.  Mr D enjoyed the boats passing by and we all waved back at them as they drifted by.

We entered one of the many broads, a large, shallow, man made lake.  I never realised they were man made, caused by people digging for peat including the Romans and right on into the middle ages. We continued on down the river, taking in the scenery on a glorious day.

All too soon we arrived back at the quay and disembarked to make the journey back to Brazen Hall.

The tempting smell of fresh, home cooked dinner greeted us, courtesy of Carol and we decided to eat outside as the weather was still glorious. We all had a game of hoopla while waiting for dinner and eventually all scored some points.  Dinner was then served, being given an 11 out of 10 by Mrs D and thoroughly enjoyed by all.  We sat and chatted and then served the pudding which was given a very firm 12 out of 10 by all – another home made recipe that all agreed was the best bread and butter pudding ever!

In the evening we all enjoyed tapping our toes to our favourite tunes, the guest putting in requests and listening to everything from Andre Rieu to Pharell singing Happy.  Mr & Mrs D danced and swayed slowly to the music and we all kicked our legs to Andy Williams “You’re just too good to be true”.  I can’t stop smiling when I see the guests enjoying themselves and each others company, truly relaxed with lots of laughter.

But, the grand finale was yet to come… Spotted by Mr M, two low flying Hercules jets circled us, all the more amazing as Mr and Mrs Ms son flew Hercules before he retired.  I think it gave us all goose bumps although I dread to think what the pilots made of the woman in bright pink (me) excitedly waving at them!

We said our goodnights and so ended another fabulous day.

Day 4 – By Royal Appointment

The weather was undecided this morning so the ladies, Mrs M, Mrs D and Mandy decided on a shopping trip to Downham Market.  The rest of us stayed at the accommodation listening to music, completing a word jigsaw and generally relaxing.

Mr M and I went for a walk in the field adjoining the property and watched a Red Kite in the distance.  We also found a feather from a large bird which Carol assured me Mandy could identify.  The sun was trying to break through and when the ladies returned we all enjoyed a coffee in the garden.  Carol was right, Mandy correctly identified the feather as a Buzzard wing feather – we googled it to confirm.

It was soon lunch time and we all travelled just up the road to The Crown at East Rudham.  We were greeted by a friendly waitress and shown to our tables.  Throughout our holiday we have received warm and friendly welcomes wherever we have visited, Norfolk is definitely pleased to see people  visiting once again.  After a tasty sandwich lunch we set off for Sandringham, Norfolk home of the Queen and only a 20 minute drive away.

Sandringham is set in a forested estate with wide avenues leading up to it.  Once again we received a friendly welcome at the ticket office and Mr & Mrs M, with Mandy accompanying, took a buggy ride to the house where Mr and Mrs D and I met up with them.  The rain has started to fall so we were glad to get inside the house and joked about having a cuppa with the Queen.  The room guides were excellent as we wandered from room to room, all socially distanced and very well organised.  Although the rooms are grand there is a homeliness about the house and you can imagine the Royals enjoying their Christmases here.

The rain was very persistent and Mr and Mrs M decided to catch the buggy back.  The driver was only too happy to stop for a photo shoot, to recreate a picture Mrs M had taken as a child with Sandringham House in the back ground.  It was then coffee and ice cream time and of course, a wander around the shop.

We took a detour on the way home to drive along Hunstanton sea front, Mr and Mrs D stopped for a walk along the prom and the rest of us continued back to our home for the week.  On arrival we were greeted by the wonderful smells of another delicious evening meal being cooked.

We all sat down to dinner and discussed the days highlights and then settled down to watch the slide show of the weeks photographs.  I could pretend that all went smoothly but the truth is, we had a few technical issues however all of the guests were understanding and relaxed while we sorted it out.  Eventually we managed to show the photos on the big TV screen and they were enjoyed by all and the guest are very much  looking forward to receiving their personalised photo book.

We were all ready for bed after an enjoyable day and said our goodnights.

Day 5 – More Birds & Goodbyes

After breakfast, packing and loading up luggage we left Brazen Hall Barns for the final time this holiday.  We headed for Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, just a few miles away.  We sat in front of the huge picture window observing many different species of ducks and birds on the large pond outside.  Mr and Mrs D walked around the reserve and Mr and Mrs M simply enjoyed the view.  It was a marvelous way to end the holiday and very fitting to end with seeing a huge variety of birds who live or visit our shores.

Of course the day couldn’t end without a look around the shop and one or two last minute purchases. We then went to the on site cafe and were served a delicious lunch, chatting and reminiscing about our favourite bits of the holiday.

All to soon it was time to say our goodbyes, we arrived as strangers but definitely all left as friends.  It was my first time staffing a holiday since MindforYou was first established 6 years ago and I still feel the same as I did then, when I observe the laughter and chatter increasing as the week goes on and the guests enjoying a relaxing holiday.

Back then I saw the positive difference it was making for carers and those living with dementia, a true break from all of the worries and time to rediscover each other and have time for themselves.  The dedication, commitment, warmth and care of the staff is second to none and the results speak for themselves.  It’s good to be back.
